Writer's Block: News development

What's the first major news event that you remember hearing about as a child? Where did you learn about it? How did it impact your world view?

The first thing I remember is from 1962....my mother and I had just pulled up out front of our house with groceries when our next door neighbor came running out of her home very emotional and upset, telling mom that the "president's been shot!". We grabbed bags and took them in, and mom turned on our (one, black-and-white) television in the living room.

For the next, I dunno, days, maybe a week, the networks carried this all the time. I remember all the adults talking all the time, and the endless news broadcasts. I was four years old...I wasn't quite sure of what was happening, but I knew it was very important. I remember watching John-John standing there in his sunday suit (at the funeral) and I felt very close to him.
